Rey Casas

Rey was born June 19, 1961 in Havana, Cuba. There he became part of the legacy of an outstanding musical family who has permanently left its mark on the history of the island. Such is the case of his great-grandfather Luis Casas Romero, who not only was a soldier in the Cuban Liberation Army, but also was one of the pioneers of Cuban radio broadcasting. Moreover, he was a great musician and composer who created the genre known as “Música Criolla”, which later gave birth to Danzón and the rest of the derivatives of that genre. Under such influence, at age seven this youngster took his first music lessons from his uncle, professor and orchestral conductor Rafael Casas, who was astoished by the skill that the young man demonstrated at the piano. Years later, his family traveled to Spain with a short stopover in the United States, where Rey’s talent led him to share the stage with important figures in the musical world; among them such exceptional musicians as Israel López “Cachao”, Paquito D’Rivera, José José, Álvaro Torres, Olga Guillot, Nelson Ned, Lucia Méndez, Lucho Gatica, Roberto Ledesma and others. The experience confirmed Rey as a virtuoso instrumentalist and an excellent composer. Rey’s compositions have traveled the globe in soap operas such as “Morelia”, “Guadalupe” and “Maria Elena”, and he has been nominated for two Grammy awards. He was number one on the Billboard Charts for ten consecutive weeks with his theme “Pasión en Fuga”, which also was very well received in Mexico and met with great acclaim during its debut there on the show “Siempre en Domingo” hosted by the great, Raúl Velasco. All this, by a talented pianist who believes that music is the only way to live. And it is by this presentation and dedication that he has managed to stand out once again with this musical portfolio he offers to us, which forever brands Rey Casas as a Man of Soul and Feeling.
